Trust CEO Ricky Houghton says the show home is something people can reach out and touch and gives hope about the possibility of actually owning a home. The show home will be on leased land near The Warehouse carpark in Kaiitaia and open for viewing in December. The trust has made a conditional offer on land on Griggs St in Kaitaia.
If the sale goes through, the land would be subdivided into 600 m2 sections and five Of these houses would be placed on site.

It would be a pilot to provide affordable housing that could work in other areas. The three bedroom homes, designed by Unity Houses in Auckland, are a modular design. More bedrooms can be added for an extra $10,000.The material for the homes will be supplied by the Kaitaia Triboard Mill. Owners would pay about $110 a week and pay off the $63,000 mortgage in ten years.

The Trust would own the land initially, to keep the cost affordable and in seven years, after having built up equity in their homes, owners would have the option of buying the land. The owners would be mentored though the Trust's Whānau Assistance Programme.

Mr Houghton says the four day intensive home ownership education course helps people to learn skills, meet mortgage lenders and to create a plan, instead of living day by day.

We have worked diligently over the past 12 months with a number of companies and agencies and fulfilled we believe our promise of bringing about economic prosperity and improved quality of life. We have developed a home ownership model for families who have no hope of ever owning their own home. The Final design of the 670sq meter 3 bedroom is about to be lodged with the Far North District Council for blanket approval and will cost $64,500.00 GST inclusive. Plans are on foot to have a show-home located
alongside the Warehouse & McDonald's Kaitaia.

We have developed an innovative approach to families who purchase the above homes, included in the price of the home is budgeting and home retention support for the first three years.
